Video shows man attack elderly woman in grocery store checkout line

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Shocking video shows an attack in a Clayton County grocery store involving an elderly woman on a scooter.

The man who threw the 80-year-old woman from her scooter also tried to attack her daughter.

Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes spoke to both women about the unprovoked attack.

It happened inside this grocery store.

“If the manager didn't literally jump in front of the women to stop the suspect from attacking them, their injuries would've been so much worse,”

“It was really scary because my mom could’ve broken her hip,”

Surveillance video from the wholesale food outlet on Jonesboro Road in Forest Park.

It shows a man, at least 6-feet-tall, punching a 60-year-old woman in the face and then grabbing her 80-year-old mother by her hair and throwing her off her motorized scooter. He ripped out some of her hair.

“He got right up in my face and I kind of (threw) my arm like, ‘Get back off me,’ and when I did that, he balled his fist up and swung and hit me in the temple,” the victim said.

“He slammed me so hard on that floor and you know, the floor is concrete. It just happened so fast,” her mother said.

The women say their attacker was upset because he didn’t realize they were together, and he thought the mother on the scooter was trying to cut in front of him in the line.

They’re just glad the store manager jumped in to protect them before the suspect could continue to beat on them.

“if I had my cane – I left it in the car – I would’ve hit him in the back of the head,” the woman said.
