Troup, Meriwether County schools to operate as normal on Wednesday, days after storm damage

TROUP COUNTY, Ga. — School officials from both Troup County have announced plans to open schools on Wednesday, March 29, and operate as normal days after storm damage and road closures.

On Sunday morning, Channel 2′s Berndt Petersen was in Troup County after a confirmed tornado left significant damage, toppling trees and leaving people trapped in their homes.

At least five people suffered non-life-threatening injuries and taken to hospitals.

According to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office, at least 80 - 100 structures were damaged and of those, 30 - 40 were destroyed.

Tuesday evening, Troup County Schools issued the following announcement on Facebook:

All Troup County schools and departments will be open and operate as normal on Wednesday, March 29, 2023.

We understand many roads are still closed for various reasons after the recent weather. The Troup County School System Transportation Department has been out all day checking many of our school buses’ routes for travel.

At this time, it is determined that several of the routes will be adjusted for the remainder of the week.

Meriwether County Schools will operate on a normal schedule on Wednesday, March 29, 2023. There are still dirt roads that could present travel difficulty for school buses. In the event a bus is unable to reach a particular residence, the school will contact parents and guardians after the bus arrives at school and reports if any students could not be picked up. The schools will make other arrangements with the parents and guardians in these cases. The school system will continue to monitor road conditions and provide further updates if required. We apologize for any inconvenience this weather incident has caused. Thank you for your support and patience as we assure the safety and health of students.
