FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A suspected algae bloom on Lake Lanier didn’t last long. But the Lake Lanier Association want lakegoers to be mindful of changing water conditions.

The suspected bloom was reported Sept. 2 in Bald Ridge Creek on Lake Lanier and dissipated by the end of the same day, according to the Lake Lanier Association.
Officials confirmed no further algae bloom activity has been reported in the area since the initial incident.
Algae blooms can cause illness in both humans and pets through skin contact, ingestion or inhalation.

The Lake Lanier Association urges lakegoers to avoid swimming whenever they observe discolored water, unusual smells or odors, or green or blue scum.
The suspected bloom was reported near marker BR6 in Bald Ridge Creek, across from the Girl Scout camp.
Association officials stated that the affected area cleared later that same day, noting that algae blooms frequently form and dissipate rapidly in this manner.
Once an algal bloom appears, little can be done to treat it until it clears naturally. However, documenting and reporting the occurrence remains vital for tracking lake conditions.
The association stated that reports of the incident should serve to promote awareness of caution and reporting procedures rather than cause alarm for the area.
Suspected harmful algae blooms can be reported online at lakelanier.org to the Lake Lanier Association, or directly to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division or Chattahoochee Riverkeeper.
Many factors contribute to algal blooms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including high nutrient levels, warm water, slow-moving water, changes in water conditions and climate change.
