Street racers block major midtown Atlanta road to perform donuts

ATLANTA — Street racers hit a busy street in midtown Atlanta.

Channel 2 Action News received video posted on Facebook at the Peachtree Street overpass at Interstate 85 near the Brookwood Amtrak station.      

The video showed the large crowd watching as a car is doing donuts and someone is shooting fireworks.

Atlanta has seen a rise in street racers shutting down busy streets and interstate to perform their stunts. In March, video showed drivers blocking I-285 in Clayton County so that they could do donuts in the middle of the interstate. It happened under Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport’s fifth runway.

State leaders are looking at ways to crack down on the dangerous racing, by fining both the drivers and the spectators.

City leader not only going after street racers -- but the people watching also Channel 2 Action News has shown the videos of cars doing burnouts in the middle of area roadways.
