Some YMCA locations opening up in metro Atlanta

More Ys across the state could open in the next few weeks

ATLANTA — It’s official: A handful of YMCAs are reopening back up Friday.

There are seven locations in metro Atlanta that will now have their doors back open after being shut for weeks because of COVID-19 concerns.

Channel 2’s Lauren Pozen spoke with the YMCA metro Atlanta CEO and she says the facilities will be operating at about 25 percent.

You'll need to get your temperature checked before going in and you'll have to wear a mask when you're around other people.

CEO Lauren Koontz said the idea is to give members an opportunity to go to a Y that is reasonability close to them.

Things will look a little different inside, she says markings will be clear on the ground to practice social distancing and every other workout machine will be blocked off.

“We spent the last month with various subgroups on facilities and training, everything you can think of how can we create the safest environment for those that want to come into the facilities,” Koontz said.

“The Y is like a family,” said Y member Adrianne Ochoa.

Ochoa says she's been going to the Y for years. To say she is excited about getting back inside is an understatement.

“Getting in the water! It’s not going to happen this Friday, but I do water aerobics with all of my mermaids and I am ecstatic to be able do that soon hopefully,” Ochoa said.

Pools at the Y will open next week.

“You just really need your friends and just everything was removed so just to have the hope that this is going to open up maybe start to get a little bit back to normal again is so encouraging,” Ochoa said.

For those YMCA locations open, you'll have to make a reservation to use some of the amenities like the pool or group exercising.

You can expect additional locations to open up in the following weeks.
