Principal's Jeep photo sparks social media outrage

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — After a social media uproar, some parents are defending the Cherokee County principal who has been taking heat for protecting her Jeep from storms.

Parents snapped pictures of Free Home Elementary School Principal Karen Carl's Jeep parked under an awning in one of the school exits so it wouldn't be damaged by hail.

"I think it's unfortunate when someone puts a material possession above the safety of our children and that kind of appears to be what happened," said parent Jenny Gilreath.

Channel 2 Action News sent the photos to the Cherokee County School District and a district spokesperson said that we weren't the only ones to send them in.

The spokesperson said "the issue has been addressed with the principal and we can assure parents it will not happen again."

Other parents say the picture doesn't tell the whole story.

"Today you're actually here about an episode that has been blown out of proportion and does not truly represent what our principal is or who she is," said parent Ken Lightsey.

Cherokee County schools did not say if it will take any disciplinary action against the principal.
