Parents listened how Metro Atlanta redistricting will affect their children

Fulton County Schools kicked off their Redistricting, consolidation, and Closure Process Wednesday.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — The district held its first community meeting Wednesday night at Langston Hughes High School in South Fulton. District leaders said the goal was to gather feedback before making any decisions.

“We have really streamlined the process to make sure that we begin with that community input before we get into our deep planning on this,” Fulton County Schools Chief Operating Officer Noel Maloof said.

Last year, FCS voted to close Parklane and Spalding Drive Elementary amid declining enrollment. Maloof says the district learned from that process and wants to get parents’ feedback before the first map is drawn.

On Wednesday, the focus was in South Fulton, deemed geographic Region A by the school district. For parents in South Fulton, the discussion centered on the future opening of a replacement Camp Creek Middle School and how attendance boundaries may need to shift to balance enrollment among nearby schools.

According to the district, the Region A review focuses on Camp Creek Middle School, Renaissance Middle School, and Sandtown Middle School.

Maloof says no school closures or consolidations are being considered in Region A right now.

Parents who attended the meeting said they wanted to learn how any redistricting could affect their children.

“It was a little panic at first,” parent Tiffany Harper said. But she added that the meeting reassured her that families will have opportunities to provide feedback throughout the process.

However, while South Fulton is focused on boundary adjustments, district leaders said North Fulton (Region C) faces a different challenge.

“Our decline in enrollment in Region C is so much different than what we’re seeing here in Region A,” Noel Maloof said. “We are considering consolidation in Region C, and that will be part of the process.”

According to the district’s redistricting website, Region C includes schools north of the Chattahoochee River. The district will hold meetings on both elementary and middle schools because of declining enrollment and available classroom space.

Schools under review in North Fulton

No decisions or plans have been made. Over the next few months, the district will hold multiple meetings to allow for public feedback before making any proposal to the school board.

Just because a school is under review does not mean it is up for closure or consolidation. However, the schools impacted in the current review include the following schools:

Elementary schools (first meeting October 13th at Roswell High School)

  • Esther Jackson Elementary School
  • Hembree Springs Elementary School
  • Mimosa Elementary School
  • Vickery Mill Elementary School

Middle schools (first meeting October 7th at Centennial High School)

  • Autrey Mill Middle School
  • Elkins Pointe Middle School
  • Haynes Bridge Middle School
  • Holcomb Bridge Middle School

District officials emphasized that no attendance-zone changes, consolidations, or closures have been approved.

The process will include multiple rounds of public feedback before the school board considers any recommendations.

A vote on any proposal would not happen until next year.
