I-285 reopen after being shutdown for hours after tractor-trailer accident, officials say

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Both sides of Interstate 285 are now reopen after a tractor-trailer caught on fire with some type of flammable liquid on board.

According to Sandy Springs officials, one tractor trailer rear ended a another tractor trailer hauling scrap metal and magnesium shortly after 6 p.m. on New Northside Drive.

The explosion from the impact came from the fuel onboard the tractor-trailer that caused the accident, which killed the driver.

Officials said due to the intensity of the fire and scrap metal, it has taken longer than normal to clear the roadway because the magnesium continues to reignite.

Cleanup is still going and officials say the hope to reopen the lanes soon.

NewsChopper 2 was over the scene earlier, where there was a massive traffic backup from the incident.

It also showed pictures of the cab of the tractor-trailer smoking after it caught fire.

Police have not identified the person who was killed or said how the crash happened.
