Mother says she was fined after school bus driver closed door on her arm

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A DeKalb County mother says a confrontation with a school bus driver ended with her arm stuck in the bus door.

Latoia Mobley told Channel 2’s Audrey Washington she reached into the school bus to get her daughter when the driver shut the door on her arm. Now, she wants that driver off the job.

A neighbor captured the encounter on video.

“I’m still in shock,” Mobley said.

Mobley said it all started when she confronted her daughter’s Dekalb County school bus driver about a separate issue back in September.

“She drove with my arm in the door. She would not open the door. It was frightening,” Mobley said.

Mobley said her boyfriend eventually pried the doors open to release her arm.

In January, Mobley went to court over the incident and to her surprise, the judge ruled in the bus driver’s favor.

“I was fined $250 for interfering with school bus operations,” Mobley said.

“And what happened to the bus driver?” Washington asked.

“Nothing,” Mobley said.

Washington contacted the Dekalb County School District about the situation.

In a statement, officials said:

"The safety and well-being of all students and employees remains a top priority.

On January 31, 2020, a judge ruled the DCSD bus driver was not at fault, and that the driver was protecting students by closing the door. The driver was reassigned to a different route last fall to ensure no further confrontation."

However, Mobley says the reassignment doesn’t go far enough. She wants the driver fired.

"I feel something should happen, she is still operating,” Mobley said.

Mobley has retained an attorney.

She wants the school district to pay for medical bills she says she incurred during the incident.
