IRS mailing letters to 350,000 Georgians who may still be eligible for stimulus check

If you think you might be eligible for a stimulus payment and haven’t received one, the Internal Revenue Service wants to hear from you.

The IRS said it is mailing 348,631 letters to people in Georgia to encourage them to see if they’re eligible. In total, the agency is sending out 9 million letters nationwide.

The letter encourages people to register at IRS.gov with the non-fliers tool before Oct. 15 deadline if they want to receive a payment by the end of year.

“The letters are being sent to people who haven’t filed a return for either 2018 or 2019 or already registered with the IRS,” said spokesman Michael Devine. “These are people who may not have had to file a tax return because they appear to have very low incomes based on Forms W-2 and 1099, and other third-party statements available to the IRS.”

A copy of the letter can be found here on the IRS website. The agency said that receiving a letter doesn’t guaranteed that you’re eligible, but you could qualify if you:

  • are a U.S. citizen or resident alien;
  • have a work-eligible Social Security number; and
  • can’t be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s federal income tax return.

Individuals who qualify can receive up to $1,200 and married couples can receive up to $2,400.

People with children who were under the age of 17 at the end of 2019 can get up to an additional $500 for each child if they qualify.
