GBI investigating after officer-involved chase, crash, shootout off I-75 in Bartow County

BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. — Heavy police activity shut down an off-ramp of I-75 in Bartow County Tuesday afternoon after witnesses say a pickup truck that was being chased by police crashed and the driver got in a shootout with officers.

Channel 2′s Richard Elliot was at the scene on Highway 140, where a black pickup truck was crashed on the shoulder and an Adairsville police vehicle was surrounded with crime scene tape. Witnesses told Elliot that the truck crashed into a cement truck during a chase before it went off the road.

The suspect then began firing at officers, who fired back, according to witnesses. The suspect, who hasn’t been identified, was shot by officers and taken to the hospital. His condition has not been released.

GDOT cameras showed at least a dozen officers at the scene.

Adairsville police would only confirm that two members of their department, along with county and state officers, were involved in a shooting incident.
