Gwinnett County unveils new high school with a focus on artificial intelligence

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — The Gwinnett County School District is home to more students than any other school district in the state.

Some of those students heading back to the classroom this week are heading back to a brand new high school.

Seckinger High School is one of the first public schools in the country to focus on artificial intelligence and getting students ready for the technology of the future.

Students and staff who spoke with Channel 2′s Matt Johnson say they are excited to be part of the innovative school.

Sanai Wilkinson is one of 200 high school seniors who signed up to join Seckinger High School. When asked why she did, she says she was just looking for something different.

“Schools don’t really talk about what’s next after high school. But this I feel like, I feel like it’s a good jump,” Wilkinson said.

Technology is everywhere at the 538,000 square foot state-of-the-art campus.

BACK 2 SCHOOL:

The Buford school is the first in the county and bills itself as the first in the country to feature a curriculum that focuses on developing artificial intelligence.

“We are going to hit the ground running with learning to define artificial intelligence,” one teacher told Johnson.

The focus is on making students “future ready” with additional classes about engineering and labs that feature wood, metal and 3D printers.

“We want to make sure that our students are ready for that future,” principal Memorie Reesman said.
