GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Amazon, which has seen booming business during this pandemic, is opening a massive new packing and shipping center in metro Atlanta. It’s going to deliver about 1,000 new jobs to the area.
Channel 2′s Tom Regan attended the news conference held by Gov. Brian Kemp and local leaders at the new center Tuesday afternoon.
Amazon loves Georgia. This is the eighth fulfillment center it has opened in the Peach State in the last 10 years.
The 700,000 square foot fulfillment center sits on the Gwinnett-DeKalb County line near a major highway. It will also be the first using advanced robotic technology to package and ship goods around the country.
Kemp said the new center is yet another example of why Georgia remains the top rated state in the country for business development.
“We got the world’s busiest airport, our great ports, plenty of great roads for transportation, rail networks,” Kemp said. “We are the logistics hub of the South.”

Employees will sort, pack and ship tens of thousands of online orders, bringing a new economic opportunity to metro Atlanta. The Amazon center will have 1,000 full time jobs that average $15 an hour with full benefits and career advancement learning.
“The company will pay 95% of up front costs, for courses in high-demand fields, regardless of whether the skills will be used for Amazon,” said Robert Packett, regional director of operations for Amazon.
Amazon said it has spent $4 billion on COVID-19 initiatives to protect customers and employees. Kemp said while the pandemic has thrown a serious punch, the state’s economy is fighting back.
“Despite COVID-19, we have supported the creation of 24,000 new jobs through 350 projects,” he said. “That’s a 4% increase from 2019.”
Officials say Amazon will lease the facility and hire employees for packing and shipping, human resources, security, finance and information technology. You can apply at amazon.jobs.
Amazon has created 10,500 jobs in Georgia and invested more than $3 billion across the state.
