A driver following the SUV north on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard called 911 around 2 p.m. on Oct. 12 to report it driving erratically past Pleasant Hill Road.

The officer caught up with the SUV farther north, near River Mill Drive. When he turned on his lights, the SUV hit the curb.

He walked up not knowing what he would find. Within seconds, he asked the driver whether he had diabetes.

The man, 42, said yes. He was heading home from dialysis.

The officer took his keys, checked his eyes, handed him some glucose gel and called for an ambulance. When he looked at the glucose monitor on the man’s arm, it read about 40.

The man said the monitor had been sending alerts since he left dialysis.

“I was starting to panic because I knew that I shouldn’t be out on the road with this condition,” he said.

He needed a second tube of gel before paramedics arrived. His sugar slowly climbed back to 71, but he still could not tell them what city he was in.

“My concern is you, but it’s also the safety of everybody else on the road, and I don’t think we’ll be doing anyone a favor if we let you go,” the officer told him.

The officer parked and locked the SUV and offered to help get the man a ride back to it after he left the hospital.

“I just don’t want to endanger anything,” the man said.

He left without a ticket.

“I’m not gonna write you any tickets or get you in any kind of trouble,” the officer told him. “I’m glad we were able to stop you before something happened to you.”
