GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — For students at Seckinger High School, Sept. 11 is something they know largely from history lessons.
Most were not yet born when the terrorist attacks happened 25 years ago.
Before Friday night’s football game, however, students had the opportunity to learn more about the meaning behind the day and the sacrifices made in its aftermath.

Before taking the field, players participated in a lesson about the U.S. Flag Code of Conduct, including how to properly carry, present, raise and fold the American flag.
The lesson also focused on the importance of treating the flag with respect and understanding what it represents.
An American flag was then brought onto the field before kickoff as the team prepared for the game.

Seckinger coach Tony Lotti said the evening was about more than football. He reminded his players that having the opportunity to play on that field is a privilege made possible by the men and women who have fought for the country’s freedom.
For the students, the lesson offered a way to connect an event they have only known through textbooks and classroom discussions with the sacrifices of those who lived through it.
The school’s tribute came as communities across the country marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks and remembered the nearly 3,000 people who were killed.
