3 arrested after trying to steal car, leading police on chase through several counties

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities are investigating a pursuit that ended in a crash on a busy interstate.

Gwinnett County police told Channel 2 Action News early Friday that officers were pursuing three individuals involved in an incident that began near Pleasant Hill Road.

They say it started when the trio was spotted trying to steal a car from a dealership.

During the pursuit, the individuals led the officers into DeKalb County on Interstate 85 southbound, where Brookhaven police officers quickly got involved.

Authorities said at that point, an officer performed a PIT maneuver to stop the suspect vehicle before taking them into custody.

No one was seriously hurt in the crash, but the three suspects were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes spoke to drivers about how police handle high-speed chases.

Evan Hicks said he understands why some people want police to stop chasing suspects altogether.

“The fact that they have to do that is more disturbing than anything,” he said.

Another said he says the drivers in a police chase have no reason to keep them going.

“Normally, if you’re being chased by police, you should stop. You have no reason to just continue on and on, you should stop,” a driver named Leonard said. “You have to maintain law and order one way or another, so it’s really subjective.”
