Gunfire at the pumps: Man killed after fight in gas station parking lot

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Police say a fight in the middle of a Gwinnett County gas station parking lot turned even more violent when gunfire erupted.

Witnesses said the fight happened Saturday night between gas pumps at a Lilburn Exxon station.

The fight came to a stop when one man pulled a gun and began shooting.

The victim, 23-year-old Giovanni Segura, and his girlfriend sped away on Lawrenceville Highway. Police said he died before he could get to a hospital.

“Did they know each other?” Channel 2′s Gwinnett County bureau chief Tony Thomas asked police.

"That’s what we are still investigating,” said Capt. Scott Bennett, with the Lilburn Police Department.

Lilburn police made a quick arrest in the city's first murder in over a year.

Oliver Maldinado Jiminez, 20, is jailed, but police said they aren't sure what prompted him to shoot and kill Segura.

A GoFundMe account was set up by Segura’s friends to help pay for his funeral costs.

“How many shots were fired?” Thomas asked.

“It’s hard to tell. We didn’t recover any shell casings at the scene,” Bennett said.

In warrants Thomas obtained, a detective wrote Maldonado Jiminez shot "the victim multiple times with a handgun."

Police said Segura had just landed a couple of good punches to Maldonado Jiminez’s face. He had turned to get back in his car when Maldonado Jiminez pulled out a gun, officials said.

“He fired at the victim as he was getting back in the car and then at the car as it was pulling out of the parking lot,” Bennett said.

The entire event was recorded on surveillance video. A SWAT team arrested the suspect Sunday at a home just outside Lawrenceville.

Maldonado Jiminez’s parents said he came home Saturday night and spoke about getting punched in the face, but never said anything about a shooting.

“We’ve got two or three different theories about what instigated this, but we aren’t sure right now,” Bennett said.

Thomas tried reaching Segura’s family and girlfriend, but no one has responded.

Maldonado Jiminez will make his first court appearance on murder and aggravated assault charges Tuesday.
