Georgia homeowners pick up the pieces after violent tornado damaged dozens of homes

LAGRANGE, Ga. — LaGrange homeowners said they held on to prayers as strong winds slashed through their homes Thursday afternoon.

“All I could remember myself saying was, ‘Lord, is it going to ever end? Lord, is it ever going to end? Please don’t take me this way,” Alisa Winston told Channel 2′s Ashli Lincoln.

Baldwin Park homeowners say in a matter of seconds after hearing tornado sirens, the destruction began.

“We saw this roof detach and come toward us and we immediately ran towards the back,” Winston said.

Krnisha Gamble says down trees blew in windows and strong winds tore through the side of her aunt’s home.

She and three family members, including her 91-year-old grandmother, took shelter in their closet while the storm passed.

“It was the most scariest thing I heard. At any moment, I was thinking that the roof was going to come off,” Gamble said.

Diverse Power Company, which serves LaGrange, reports more than 1,000 power outages in the area.

The company said it could take days before power is restored in some areas.
