Metro Atlanta sheriff warns of toll scam messages

FULTON COUNTY/HABERSHAM COUNTY, Ga. — The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office is warning people to be careful and not to fall for scams.

According to sheriff’s office, a new toll fee scam is “making the rounds” and deputies want to make sure that the community doesn’t fall victim to it.

The sheriff’s office said a toll scam is being circulated where fabricated upcoming court hearings for violations in Fulton County are being texted to drivers.

“That text is a scam,” the office said.

Deputies say that if you do get a text with the scam, do not scan the QR code on it, just delete the message instead.

The sheriff’s office put out a reminder as well that agencies do not send citations by text message and toll citations are mailed with proof of the violation in a physical copy.

Drivers who have not driven through Fulton County recently should also remember they have not committed a violation in that jurisdiction.

Anyone who receives communications from a random phone number or email address should know that the messages “generally are scams.”
