Fulton County starts counting ballots for the 3rd time

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Election workers in Fulton County are back counting ballots in the presidential election for a third time.

This recount comes after the Trump campaign requested it. Candidates can request a recount if the margin of victory is less than half a percent. President-elect Joe Biden won the state by just under 3,000 votes.

Channel 2′s Lauren Adams was at the Georgia World Congress Center, where workers were counting absentee ballots Saturday. The commission chair said this will hopefully be the last day of the recount effort.

The state has to finish counting more than 5 million ballots by Wednesday at midnight.

Fulton County Commission Chairman Robb Pitts said he hopes to be finished by Tuesday.

“On Tuesday, there is the runoff election to fill the unexpired term of the late congressman, John Lewis,” Pitts said. “So some of the same equipment will have to be used. Therefore, we will be working overtime, not literally overtime, but working very hard to finish earlier.”

If it’s necessary, the recount will also continue tomorrow and Monday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

DeKalb County started their recount on Nov. 24. In a press released Saturday, officials said they believe they will finish on Monday and eliminated a scheduled counting day originally planned for Sunday.

“We believe we are in a great place and this change in the schedule will allow our team to rest and come in ready to complete this recount ahead of the deadline,” said DeKalb VRE Director Erica Hamilton. “I am extremely proud of our effort and look forward to finalizing the recount efforts on Monday.”
