Forsyth County teen is baking cakes and giving back

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Arushi Gupta says it all started when she came across some old pans.

“I’ve never seen these before. I talked to my mom and I’m like, ‘what are these?’  She says ‘they are your grandmother’s old baking pans. We used to make cakes all the time.’ I was like, ‘I like cakes!’”

She’s been busy in the kitchen ever since, baking goodies that would make Martha Stewart smile. But the high school junior soon discovered a greater purpose for it all after volunteering at a local farm and food pantry.

“I didn’t even know what food insecurity meant. I was maybe 10 or 11. So I did some research on my own and realized how widespread it was,” Arushi said.

Food insecurity exists even in a wealthy county like Forsyth. So Arushi started a baking business called Wholesome Whisk on Instagram. All the profits from everything she bakes with her grandmother’s pans will go to the Meals By Grace pantry.

“Something I brought from India, not knowing if I’d ever use it, which now comes into use every day. She not only does me proud, she does all of us proud,” mother Stuti Gupta said.

Arushi baked and sold dozens of cakes this year, and proceeds for the pantry are piling up.

“Sometimes it feels like you’re a small person in such a large world. But when you break it down, you can make an impact just by doing something you know how to do,” Arushi said.
