SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. — Police in Social Circle said an excavator that was sitting too high on the truck that was carrying it caused a lot of mayhem in the city Friday afternoon.

At around 12:37 p.m., the excavator snagged and brought down overhead power lines and an AT&T line, causing a grass fire and an explosion and knocking out power to half of the city, Social Circle PD reported on social media.
The destruction required responses from the Social Circle Fire Department, Social Circle police, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, utility crews and AT&T.

“Considering the explosion, the fire, and the force required to pull down multiple lines, we find it extremely difficult to believe the driver neither heard nor felt what happened,” the police said. “Apparently, checking the height of your load—and stopping after taking out power to half the city—was not on today’s pre-trip checklist.”
Social Circle PD said the truck has been identified thanks to public response to their social media query.
