Gas station owner putting up displays shot, killed by robber in DeKalb, employee says

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A DeKalb County gas station owner was shot and killed early Wednesday morning, an employee told Channel 2′s Darryn Moore.

At around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, the owner stopped by the BP Gas Station on Flat Shoals Road to put displays in front of the store, when someone showed up with a gun and opened fire.

An employee who was off duty when the shooting happened told Moore that the owner who was hit ran inside the store and collapsed. The alleged shooter then grabbed the cash from the register and took off.

Police identified the victim as Rahil Surani, 24.

Two other employees were in the store at the time but were not hurt.

There are cameras inside and outside the gas station based on a county ordinance, meaning the cameras should have captured video of the shooter and what happened.

Channel 2′s Tom Regan was outside the gas station on Wednesday afternoon, where customers were stunned by what happened.

The gas station just opened about a year ago and customers thought they were safe.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with people,” one woman said. “You can’t even go to work, even do your job without something like this happening.”

Empress Trotter said she lives nearby and that there are too many people loitering outside the gas station late at night. She said many are up to no good.

“It does bug me and bother me because all these gas stations need to close down by 12 a.m.,” Trotter said. “If these people don’t have what they need by 12 a.m., then too bad.”

Police have not released the name of the shooting victim, but an employee told Regan that he was 24 years old.
