Laharry Ward, 57, of Decatur, also faces charges of aggravated assault and violating a family violence order.
Police found Toyka Biggs, 43, with multiple stab wounds and injuries from repeated blows to the head on July 21 at her Decatur apartment.
The deadly stabbing occurred roughly a month after Ward was ordered to stay away from Biggs following a prior domestic violence arrest.
DeKalb County police responded just after 1:30 p.m. to a report of an unresponsive person at an apartment complex on Friendly Heights Boulevard in unincorporated Decatur.
Upon arrival, officers found Biggs lying on the apartment floor. Surveillance video recorded at the complex showed Ward at her apartment around the time of her death.

Police previously arrested Ward on June 20 on a charge of battery—family violence against Biggs.
The bond conditions in that earlier case barred him from having any contact with Biggs and prohibited him from returning to the apartment they had previously shared.
Officers arrested Ward for the killing on July 29, and he has remained held in the DeKalb County Jail without bond.
The District Attorney’s Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Unit will prosecute the case. Once the matter is assigned to a DeKalb County Superior Court judge, Ward will be scheduled for an arraignment before a trial date is set.
