DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — DeKalb County officials announced a bat found on Aug. 21 near Terry Mill Road tested positive for rabies.
The bat that tested positive was dead.
The county reminded residents that Georgia is a rabies-endemic state, meaning the rabies virus is present year-round.
The DeKalb County government said the bat was found in the Stone Mountain area by Millstone Trail.

While it “is not unusual for the county to report several rabies cases each year,” county officials said residents should make sure their pets are up to date for preventative vaccination.
Residents were also encouraged to eliminate outdoor feeding stations and access to garbage cans.
“Anyone who has been bitten or scratched by an animal should seek medical attention immediately,” the county said. “Residents are advised to watch pets and contact DeKalb County Animal Control if unusual behavior occurs.”
The county said wild animal trapping will only happen if a domestic pet or person was bitten or scratched.
