‘Almost like a freight train:’ 70-year-old DeKalb woman says her neighbor’s dogs knocked her down

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A 70-year-old woman is recovering after she says she was attacked by her neighbor’s dogs.

Winnie Brown says she was in her driveway when a pair of loose pit bulls charged at her and knocked her down. As she was screaming for help, she says another neighbor came and saved her life by getting the dogs off of her.

“It was almost like a freight train because we didn’t have time to do anything. So I said, ‘No, no, no’ as I got almost to my car. That’s when he pushed me down,” Brown described.

She and her neighbor called 911 and Animal Control came and told her the woman was going to surrender both dogs.

DeKalb County Animal Control told Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes that the woman surrendered one of the dogs and her son picked up the other.

Brown and several other neighbors have approached the dogs’ owner for nearly a year to complain about how often the dogs get loose and make them feel unsafe.

“I said, ‘Do you know Georgia has a leash law?’ and the young lady said she didn’t know nothing about that,” Brown recalled.

She says the neighbor was apologetic when first approached last year, but neighbors say the dogs kept terrorizing them.

Fernandes learned that Animal Control has been called to the area in reference to the pit bulls at least five times, and have cited the owner three times.

“I don’t pay rent. I pay mortgage, and this is where I stay. I want to live comfortable,” Brown said. “I might not need to say this, but I’m going to get me a gun today.”

The dog owner is due in court for this incident later this month.
