Dash cam video shows events leading to deadly officer shooting

BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation released dashcam video from a police cruiser that shows an Emerson police officer shooting a suspect who pulled a gun during a traffic stop.

Emerson police officer Rokert K. Smith pulled over a gold SUV he spotted on Interstate 75 because of a tag violation on Oct. 14.

The GBI says Smith discovered the driver, Brent Andrew Brannon, 27, had outstanding warrants for trafficking heroin and was considered armed and dangerous.

The video shows Smith asking for back-up and then using his Taser on Brannon when he is not complying with orders.

Smith then yells "drop the gun" and fires his weapon repeatedly at Brannon.

Brannon died shortly after the shooting.

Investigators told Channel 2 Action News that Brannon had two weapons in his SUV.

Smith remains on leave pending the results of the investigation.
