NEWNAN, Ga. — Coweta County District Attorney Herb Cranford released a statement about a recent officer-involved shooting where an 18-year-old was killed.

Channel 2’s Eryn Rogers spoke exclusively to the family of Zadarious Dorsey after his death, who said they wanted answers from police, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the District Attorney’s Office about the case, but had not been contacted yet.

As previously reported, Dorsey was killed in a shooting involving a Newnan Police Department officer on Saturday.

Dorsey’s family said they want answers after his death, which happened at about 1 a.m. on Cliff Circle after a Newnan police officer was following a white car that had been driving near the intersection of Dodson Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

In the release from the DA’s office, Cranford said the DA offered to meet with Dorsey’s family to discuss the process for investigating officer-involved shootings, and to go over the evidence currently in possession of the DA’s office.

Cranford said that includes the bodycam footage.

Dorsey’s family said he “was not a criminal” and are demanding the bodycam footage from the incident.

“We need to know why y’all followed them, when did you cut your light on, it was just one officer, when did you call for back up,” Dorsey’s aunt, Shannon Arnold told Channel 2 Action News.

“He was somebody, and I loved him,” Angela Brown, another of Dorsey’s aunts, said.

Dorsey’s family declined to meet with the DA, for now, with a member of the family saying it was because the family was grieving.

To get Dorsey’s family as much information as possible for when they do meet, the DA requested Dorsey’s autopsy and examination of evidence be expedited.

“It is the District Attorney’s understanding that Dorsey’s autopsy was completed today by the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office, so the District Attorney also requested that the completion of the autopsy report be expedited,” Cranford’s release says.

Cranford said in the statement that he is considering publicly releasing evidence from the case, including the videos, once Dorsey’s family has reviewed them, despite the records not being subject to public release during investigation or while prosecution is pending.

Going forward, Cranford said he will decline further public comment while the case is under investigation by the GBI and under review by his office.

The Coweta County NAACP told Channel 2 Action News they are also getting involved in the case.
