MARIETTA, Ga. — A new program is teaching students about the dangers of distracted driving.
The Marietta Community School has partnered with Marietta Wrecker to host a driver roadside safety event for students who completed the Marietta Cobb driver’s ed program.
“We have a great partnership here from a lot of people who just care about student safety," director Kimberly Custance said.

Channel 2 Action News got a first look at the program as it staged a crash. The reenactment gave students a glimpse into what could happen if they drive distracted or don’t wear their seatbelt.
“Just stuff that a driver needs to know,” student Kris Watkins.
Chris Welchel‘s company covers a lot of metro Atlanta.
“And we see youth involved in accidents every single day,” the Marietta Wrecker COO said.

The Governor’s Office for Highway Safety says 40% of young drivers, including teens, involved in crashes were driving distracted. That’s according to the latest numbers available from 2023.
Beyond distracted driving, students learn how to complete a vehicle safety check and more.
“We have a jumpstart station here behind me. We also have a station on how to change a tire,” Welchel showed.
There is a second workshop scheduled for April.
“We are proud of the work that we do to prepare students to be safe and confident drivers,” Custance said.
