Former elementary school teacher, coach guilty of sex crime against a minor

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A former elementary school teacher who also coaches at a high school in Cobb County has been convicted of a sex crime against a minor that happened off-campus.

According to a warrant obtained by Channel 2 Action News, Mareno Smith is accused of sexually assaulting an underage relative.

Channel 2 Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell was in the courtroom as Smith was found guilty of incest and sentenced to prison.

The judge sentenced Smith to 30 years with the first 29 to serve in prison. He will then have one year of probation and must register have a sex offender.

He was also ordered to have no contact with a child age 16 or under.

Smith was a teacher at an elementary school in East Cobb and an assistant football coach at Allatoona High School.

Newell is working to learn if he was terminated from the district during the investigation.
