More Clayton County dogs facing euthanasia if not adopted this week

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Just days after 20 dogs were saved from being euthanized at the Clayton County Animal Shelter, another group of 20 are in trouble.

Channel 2 Action News followed the week-long journeys of 20 dogs last week as they faced being euthanized if they weren’t rescued or adopted.

After seeing their stories on Channel 2 Action News, families and rescue groups flocked to the animal shelter and rescued all 20 dogs.

The dogs will have to be adopted by 1 p.m. on August 25 or the shelter says they will have to be put down.

“The animals below are listed due to the animal’s special needs, the time frame the animal has been at housed at our shelter, or because they are at greatest risk of possible illness. These animals have been in our facility for a large amount of time,” the shelter said in a Facebook post.

The current euthanasia rate for the shelter is 3%.

“This is not an action that any of us take lightly or want to do. We wish that all of our animals would make it into loving forever homes where they are pampered for the remainder of their lives. Any assistance from the community and rescue groups would be greatly appreciated,” Capt. Jodi Turnipseed said.

Turnipseed said that when Clayton County Animal Control gets overcrowded, they put out a list of animals that urgently need adopting. The shelter gets some support from rescue groups, but Turnipseed said that without that help, they would have to euthanize more dogs.

The final adoption fee for families is $95 and the dogs will be rabies vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped and spayed or neutered.

If you would like to adopt one of the dogs, you can visit their Anvil Block Rd. location in Ellenwood or reach out to them here.
