JONESBORO, Ga. — The Clayton County School District has voted to name a new school after former First Lady Michelle Obama.
The school board voted Monday night name the new south Clayton elementary school, which is currently under construction in Jonesboro, Michelle Obama STEM Elementary School.
The motion was approved 7 to 2.
Board member Ophelia Burroughs told CNN she was the one who suggested renaming the school after Obama.
“I just felt like there aren’t many places named after women,” Burroughs told CNN. “We are trying to push forward in our society because we have been left behind for so long.”
The school is expected to open in July.
Obama will have to approve the name change before the plan can be made official.
