2 arrests made in May murder of 83-year-old Carroll County woman

CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. — Months after the deadly shooting, deputies have made an arrest in the murder of an 83-year-old woman in Carroll County.

Barbara Gibson was found shot to death inside her home off Burwell-Mt. Zion Road during Mother’s Day weekend on May 9.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office announced it made two arrests in the case Tuesday and held a news conference Wednesday to release more details about the case.

Cyndy Oney told Channel 2′s Kristen Holloway that she lived next door to Gibson and found her the day she was killed.

“She was such a good person; the reason people are here -- it’s not just because she got killed but the way she lived and the person she was in the community,” Oney said. “I want justice to be done.”

Carroll County Sheriff Terry Langley said Andrew Conard, 37, and Amanda Sperry, 29, are both now in jail on murder charges.

Deputies said on May 9, the couple shot and killed Gibson in her home. Langley said the motive behind the shooting was robbery.

“They were looking to rob somebody, then had staked out the house. They realized she lived alone. Even though they lived in the same neighborhood, they did stake it out and came back a day or two later and robbery was the motive,” Langley said.

“We’ve all had trouble sleeping. Dan and I are the ones that went in and found her, that made it even harder. I keep wanting to wake up and say all this is just nightmare,” Oney said.

Langley said tips from the community helped with leading to an arrest.

Deputies told Holloway they hope Conard and Sperry get the death penalty.
