ATLANTA — It has been a week of mixed emotions at Zoo Atlanta.
Just days after the highly anticipated arrival of giant pandas Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, zoo officials announced the unexpected death of a beloved member of the African Savanna herd.
Imara, a zebra known for her spirited personality and leadership within the herd, died earlier this week.
In a message shared by Zoo Atlanta, animal care staff reflected on the impact Imara had on both her caregivers and fellow animals.
“The cute zebra with the white-tipped ears, Imara came to us just a few years ago and quickly earned a place in our hearts,” her care team said.

Caretakers said Imara quickly bonded with male zebra Wembe, creating a herd of two before another female zebra, Neighomi, joined the group.
While Imara initially took time to warm up to the newcomer, zoo officials said the two eventually became inseparable.
“It took Imara a little longer to welcome new female Neighomi into her circle, but once she did, the two of them were best buds,” her care team said.
Animal care staff said Imara’s personality was on full display whenever she was out on the African Savanna habitat.
“In typical zebra fashion, she tried to rule the habitat,” the team said, recalling how she would occasionally chase the other zebras and even attempt to push giraffes away from feeding areas.
Zoo officials say Imara will be greatly missed by staff and visitors alike.
The zoo is closely monitoring Wembe and Neighomi as they adjust to life without their herd mate and is providing extra attention and care to help them through the transition.
Zoo Atlanta said its thoughts remain with the animal care team members who worked closely with Imara and cared for her throughout her life at the zoo.
