$1M Powerball ticket bought online is latest example of Georgia Lottery app’s growing popularity

GEORGIA — The Powerball jackpot just keeps getting bigger.

It’s expected to reach a near record-breaking $1.5 billion after no one won Wednesday’s jackpot. But two winners in Georgia did walk away with a million bucks, including one person who bought their ticket through the Georgia Lottery’s mobile app.

“It’s got to be so exciting because they receive notification right after that they’ve won a prize,” said Georgia Lottery CEO Gretchen Corbin.

Corbin says the lottery does not put the $1 million directly into the player’s online account. A winner must claim any prize above $600 from a Georgia Lottery office.

In this day and age of endless online hacks, Corbin says their systems are secure.

“Incredibly safe. The Georgia Lottery is about integrity and credibility and we take that incredibly serious. We want to make sure that we’re doing our all for our players and our customers,” said Corbin.

The Georgia Lottery also puts caps on the amount of money players can put in their online accounts to prevent a player from spending wildly.

Something online player Ed Lorenz says all online players need to be careful about.

“It was easy. It was convenient and I did limit myself,” said Lorenz. “That was the big thing I did, limit myself.”

In the last month, the app has had big winners from Lawrenceville, Brookhaven, Douglasville and McDonough.

On Wednesday alone, the Georgia Lottery says it sold 1.2 million tickets online. That’s the most ever for a single day.
