ATLANTA — An area left without a nearby hospital when the Atlanta Medical Center closed in 2022 could soon have easier access to a hospital.

On Friday, Atrium Health and Morehouse School of Medicine announced a $700 million investment to build a teaching hospital and care network.

The City of Atlanta confirmed they have received approval to move forward with plans for the hospital at 675 Metropolitan Parkway SW.

The city is expected to invest more than $115 million for site preparation, roadwork and equipment.

They say the goal is to bring a Level III trauma center and a network of primary, urgent and specialty care to care for those in central and south Fulton County.

“When the Atlanta Medical Center closures were abruptly announced nearly four years ago, I said they left an open wound in the heart of our communities. Today, we have come full circle,” said Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens. “This moment also reflects the promise of our Neighborhood Reinvestment Initiative: bringing meaningful investment and opportunity to communities that have gone without for too long. This is the Group Project at its best, and our Administration is grateful to every partner who locked arms to close a healthcare gap that has affected lives across South and West Atlanta.”

The new hospital will open with approximately 50 beds, but has plans to expand to more than 700 beds over time as well as a 24/7 emergency department.

Plans for the campus include medical offices as well as research and development.

An economic analysis estimates the hospital will create 5,400 construction jobs as well as 4,800 permanent direct and indirect jobs.

There is currently no date for when construction will begin or when the hospital could open.
