On March 23, Sgt. Houston, with the APD’s Homicide Unit, was searching near Piedmont Avenue for a critical missing person when she heard a woman screaming, “My baby, my baby!”
Houston immediately jumped out of her patrol car and ran toward the sound.
She found a mother holding her 3-year-old child, who was not breathing and beginning to lose consciousness.

Without hesitation, Houston began performing CPR and called for Grady EMS. Realizing the child appeared to be choking, she adjusted her approach, continuing compressions, turning the child on his side and working to clear the airway.
Bodycam video captured the moment the toddler began breathing and regaining alertness after several tense minutes.
The child was rushed to the hospital for further treatment.
The mother thanked Houston at the scene for saving her child’s life.
“The Atlanta Police Department is also grateful to Sgt. Houston, who is also a mother, was nearby during this critical moment. Her quick response and decisive actions saved the child’s life,“ the department said.
