High schoolers build ‘Little Free Libraries’ around Atlanta neighborhoods

ATLANTA — Good news for book lovers: There’s little libraries coming to an Atlanta community. And all the books are free thanks to two organizations and high school students helping to drive change.

The Home Depot Foundation, 100 Black Men of Atlanta and Banneker High School students teamed up on Thursday to help out their communities.

Students built “Little Free Libraries” for local schools. The libraries will be placed in the communities surrounding the school this spring.

Students say it’s a great opportunity to help young kids read, but it’s also a chance to work on their own skills.

“You don’t see a lot of women, especially women of color here in construction, so I was like lets open up a window to new opportunities. I love building things with my hands and when it’s done it’s like “I did that,” student Elyana McFadden said.

The students are apart of the 100 Black Men of Atlanta’s mentorship program that helps provides students with knowledge, training and skills need to land their first construction job.

The project was a part of The Home Depot week of service to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy.
