Herschel Walker fundraiser called off after controversy with supporter’s Twitter photo

ATLANTA — Herschel Walker’s campaign for U.S. Senate is coming under fire after a supporter of his posted an image on Twitter that appeared to depict a swastika.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a Twitter account for a person hosting an event for Walker in Texas had a image of syringes forming a swastika as the profile picture.

A spokesperson with Walker’s campaign tells Channel 2 Action News that the fundraiser has been called off.

A spokesperson for the campaign said the image was not a swastika, telling the AJC, “This is clearly an anti-mandatory vaccination graphic. Herschel unequivocally opposes anti-semitism and bigotry of all kinds.”

A spokeswoman released a second statement to Channel 2 Action News on Wednesday afternoon that reads:

“Herschel is a strong friend of Israel and the Jewish community and opposes hatred and bigotry of all forms. Despite the fact that the apparent intent behind the graphic was to condemn government vaccine mandates, the symbol used is very offensive and does not reflect the values of Herschel Walker or his campaign.”

The profile photo associated with the account has since been changed.

Walker, who is being backed by former President Donald Trump, has not commented on whether or not he has been vaccinated against COVID-19.

The former UGA football star is vying for the Republican nomination to take on Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock in the 2022 election.
