ATLANTA — As gas prices continue to spike across the country and here in Georgia, Gov. Brian Kemp announced Monday that he is working “to quickly move legislation that will temporarily suspend the state’s motor fuel tax.”
Kemp said because of the state’s conservative budgeting over the last couple of years, he is “confident we will be able to provide relief to hardworking Georgians - both in the form of a tax refund and lower gas taxes.”

We reported a breakdown this week of each state’s gas tax, including Georgia.
Georgia’s is listed as 29.1 cents per gallon.
The governor said he is working to remove the tax because of a “total failure of leadership in Washington.”

Earlier in the day Tuesday, President Joe Biden announced the U.S. will ban all Russian oil imports and acknowledged it will bring costs to Americans, particularly at the gas pump.
Gas prices across metro Atlanta have already spiked over $4 a gallon for regular gas.

The average price for a gallon of gas in Georgia stands at $4.06 a gallon, according to AAA. That price is still below the national average of $4.17.
A year ago, the average price of gas on Georgia was $2.59, according to AAA.
