Food truck stolen while businesswoman recovers from being sick

ATLANTA — An Atlanta businesswoman came back from being sick for a few days to find out her food truck had been stolen.

Njeri Thompson told Channel 2’s Susan Hendricks that she left the Mac Queen food truck parked along Jonesboro Road where customers knew they could find her.

But after a brief illness, she went to check on the food truck and found it wasn’t where she left it.

She says it’s more than a business, it’s a legacy she was trying to build for her four daughters.

“Growing up, she would say, ‘I’m going to hop out of my truck and pull up with my food truck,’ and I was like, ‘Alright, yup,’” her daughter Zhinnia Bell recalled. “One day, I came home and there’s a food truck in my parking lot and I was like, ‘My mom did it again. She’s done it.’”

In 2021, Njeri Thompson’s hard work and planning paid off and she was able to realize her dream of bringing joy to customers through her mac and cheese, as well as start building a family business.

“I wanted something for my daughters for them to have and run,” Njeri Thompson said.

But earlier this month, that dream hit a snag when the truck wasn’t in the spot it’s been parked in since May.

“I pulled in and yelled, ‘Where is it? Where is it?’ I didn’t even put my car in park,” she said.

Neighbors noticed someone leaving with the truck, but didn’t think anything of it because it was the middle of the afternoon.

The thief was able to cut through six locks and pull away.

“They got through these gates and pulled away. The police are looking to see what they can get from the cameras,” Nejri Thompson said.

Atlanta police confirmed to Hendricks that they are investigating the theft.

Her daughter says she has no doubt her mom will rebuild.

“I’ve always seen her go and get it for us, always figure it out. We always have had a roof over her head,” Zhinnia Thompson said.

They say their biggest fear is that the kitchen inside the truck has been taken apart because that is the the real value.
