ATLANTA — Atlanta United announced it had signed forward Breel Embolo from French club Stade Rennais to a contract through the 2029-30 season, the club announced today.
Embolo, 29, joins the Major League Soccer team after leading Switzerland to the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Over his career, the striker has recorded 100 goals and 66 assists in 380 professional appearances across top divisions in Switzerland, Germany and France.
Embolo will occupy Designated Player and international roster spots.
Team leaders for Atlanta United praised the move to bring Embolo to Atlanta.

“We’re pleased to bring a player with Breel’s combination of talent and experience at the highest levels of world soccer to Atlanta United,” Chris Henderson, chief soccer officer and sporting director of Atlanta United, said. “At age 29, he’s coming off a strong performance at the World Cup with Switzerland and has a proven track record of goal contributions in multiple top European leagues. His goal-scoring, ability to link with other players in the attack and tireless work rate are qualities that will strengthen our team from the center forward position.”

For the Swiss national team, Embolo has recorded 26 goals and 20 assists in 92 appearances since his debut in 2015.
During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he started all six matches, generating two goals and two assists. Across three career World Cup appearances, he has scored four goals and registered three assists in 14 games.
He was previously named Switzerland’s Golden Player and Best Young Player in 2015.Embolo began his professional career with FC Basel, making his first-team debut in March 2014 at age 17.
Over three seasons with Basel, he scored 31 goals and added 21 assists in 90 matches while helping the club win three consecutive Swiss league titles. He was named the Swiss Super League Player of the Year in 2015.
Before signing with Atlanta United, Embolo played the 2025 season for Stade Rennais, tallying 10 goals and three assists in 34 total matches.
In European cup play, Embolo has made 30 appearances in the UEFA Champions League and 27 appearances in the UEFA Europa League, recording four goals and four assists in each competition.
Embolo’s roster status will be finalized pending the official receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P1 Athlete Visa, the team said.
