Atlanta City Councilman throwing his hat in the race for the mayor’s office

ATLANTA — Less than one week after Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced that she would not be seeking re-election, a third candidate has filed paperwork to join the race.

Atlanta City Councilman Antonio Brown has filed paperwork with the Georgia Campaign Finance Commission for his campaign to succeed Mayor Bottoms.

Brown was elected to Atlanta City Council in 2019 and represents District 3, which includes Vine City, English Avenue and Atlantic Station.

Brown’s background comes from the business and non-profit sectors, allowing him to bring his knowledge as an entrepreneur and humanitarian to the city council.

His time in office has not all been smooth sailing. In July 2020, Brown was indicted multiple fraud charges in in what the Department of Justice says were his attempts to defraud several financial institutions.

U.S. Attorney Byong J. “BJay” Pak said Brown took out loans and made credit card purchases, and then falsely claimed he was the victim of identity theft and not responsible for the charges or repaying the loans.

Brown joins Atlanta attorney Sharon Gay and Atlanta City Council president Felicia Moore, who have both filed paperwork to join the mayoral race.

Channel 2′s Richard Elliot has spoken with several other prominent figures in the Atlanta community who say they are also considering a run including former state Sen. Jason Carter, former Rep. Kwanza Hall and Mary Norwood, who lost the mayor’s race to Kasim Reed and Bottoms by extremely narrow margins.

Rumors have also circulated that former mayor Kasim Reed is considering joining the race, but he has not yet commented.
