ATLANTA — There is a new push to make one southwest Atlanta corridor safer by closing sidewalk gaps and making it easier for neighbors to walk in their community.
At the intersection of Beecher Road and Edgewater Drive, city leaders joined excited homeowners and marked the start of a long-awaited infrastructure improvement.
“Sidewalks are easy to overlook until you don’t have them,” said Beecher Hills resident Sarah Pierre. “Right now, something as simple as going for a morning run means running alongside traffic.”
The Beecher Road Sidewalk Project is focused on installing sidewalks where they are missing.
“When you think about a neighborhood that has everything in it, from small babies that are being pushed in strollers to seniors and elderly folks that are in their 90s, you need this kind of infrastructure,” said Wayne Martin, who represents District 11 in the Atlanta City Council.
“We’re excited because sidewalks really tie neighborhoods together, making them more walkable and more accessible,” he added. “We have a school that’s nearby here, Beecher Hills Elementary School.”
Nationally, 66% of pedestrian fatalities occurred in places without sidewalks, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association.
After several neighbors called, sent letters and asked for help, the Atlanta Department of Transportation performed a safety equity and mobility analysis for the neighborhood and found sidewalks are needed.
The work carries a price tag of $2.9 million, with construction set to begin in August of next year and completion expected within a year, barring any delays.
“Today isn’t just about getting concrete poured,” Pierre said. “It’s about investing in safety, accessibility, and the future of our community, Beecher Hills. Thank you to everyone who has made this possible.”
