Atlanta officer fires at car that drove toward him, police say

ATLANTA — Atlanta police say one of its officers was forced to open fire at a car after it drove at him early Monday morning.

Channel 2’s Darryn Moore learned from Atlanta Police Maj. Carlos Peek that officers were called out to the 600 block of Martin Street SE around 6 a.m. after neighbors spotted some people possibly breaking into cars.

When the officers arrived, police said a car drove at them “in an aggressive manner” in order to get away. One officer fired his gun into the car, which caused the car to wreck outside of the complex, Peek said. Three men inside the car then ran from the car. Offices are still searching for the men.

Police believe that same car was involved in a robbery earlier in the morning in Clayton County. Peek said they found evidence linking the robbery inside of the car.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation. They are at the crime scene looking over evidence.
