ATLANTA — At the end of Grant Street in Southeast Atlanta’s Grant Park are 50-something steps leading up to the Atlanta Beltline. It’s access Beltline fans in this neighborhood had dreamed of.
But for now, it’s a “Stairway to Nowhere.”
“That’s a lot of steps. And it’s pretty steep,” Eric Carlton said. But he says they were beautiful, steep steps.

“Everyone was super excited about it opening. It’s all people talked about for a long time,” Carlton said.
Locals say construction started and finished right before the FIFA World Cup.
“It was pretty quick, makes you wonder what’s wrong with it,” Grant Park resident Pandora Achibuem said.

It turns out there was something wrong. After staying open for a very short time, some problems were discovered.
The Atlanta Beltline’s vice president of design and construction told Channel 2’s Berndt Petersen that during final inspections, engineers identified several cosmetic and dimensional deficiencies.
As a result, the concrete stairway will be removed, repoured and replaced by late October.
So for now, some Grant Park residents will continue calling it the “Stairway to Nowhere.”
“The whole thing is confusing. It’s disappointing. That’s what I’d say, confusing and disappointing at this point,” Carlton said.
