ATLANTA — The University of Alabama Athletics department says it has taken “appropriate action” after a fan was seen shoving a University of Georgia football player.
No. 1 Georgia defeated No. 6 Alabama in Tuscaloosa Saturday night. Fan tensions escalated after officials decided to not call pass interference against Georgia late in the game.

Channel 2’s Alison Mastrangelo was on the field after the game as Georgia players were leaving. She captured video of Georgia players being told to put their helmets back on while fans were throwing objects onto the field.
Another video shared by Dawg Nation showed an Alabama fan hit Georgia linebacker Raylen Wilson on his helmet before shoving his face away.
On Thursday, Alabama Athletics released a statement to local media outlets saying that it took action against the fan.
“Alabama has identified and taken appropriate action against the individual involved in videos circulating on social media following Saturday night’s football game. We take matters of this nature seriously and will not tolerate this behavior,” the department told AL.com.
The statement did not specifically say what kind of action was taken.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart addressed the issue earlier this week during his Monday media availability.
“I mean, he [Wilson] thought it was a Georgia fan. Probably helps him react the way he did initially,” Smart said. “It’s disappointing behavior by any fan and certainly nothing we condone and I’m sure Alabama doesn’t condone it either.”
No. 1 Georgia turns the page to its rivalry game with Auburn on Saturday while No. 6 Alabama plays its rivalry game with No. 14 Tennessee.
