71-year-old Georgia woman shot, killed while driving, police say

COLUMBUS, Ga. — Police are searching for a person who shot and killed a 71-year-old woman while she was driving through a west Georgia neighborhood.

The Columbus Police Department said the shooting happened Sunday on Delray Drive around 2 p.m.

Channel 2′s ABC affiliate WTVM reports that Barbara Luke, 71, was driving her car on the street when she was shot at least once.

Police said the shooting caused Luke to crash her car into a tree.

Authorities say they immediately attempted chest compressions, but Luke died at the scene.

Neighbors told WTVM that they reported gunfire in the neighborhood two days earlier.

One neighbor, who asked to stay anonymous, shared with WTVM audio of gunshots recorded on their Ring camera.

“We have been investigating that particular area,” Columbus Police Chief Freddie Blackmon told WTVM. “There have been previous reports of gunfire in that area prior to this particular incident taking place. We don’t know at this time whether or not any of that is connected.”

The investigation is still ongoing. Columbus police urges anyone with information to come forward.
