The shelter currently has 454 dogs in its care — nearly 80 more than its humane capacity of 375.
Twenty-seven dogs are on the urgent list and need to leave the shelter by 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8.
LifeLine Animal Project, which operates the shelter, is asking for help from adopters and foster families. Even people who can provide temporary foster space for just a few days or weeks are being encouraged to step up.
The shelter is also caring for 32 dogs on court hold. Many of those dogs can be fostered but cannot be adopted while their cases remain pending.
As an open-access public shelter, Fulton County Animal Services cannot turn animals away, even when it is at or above capacity.
The shelter said it is also receiving animals in pairs, trios and litters of puppies, adding to the demand for already limited kennel space.
Kennel space is temporarily reduced because of an ongoing county painting project.
The shelter said the overcrowding comes as metro Atlanta families continue to face economic and housing challenges.
Recent data from Princeton University’s Eviction Lab shows more than 142,000 eviction filings across Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Clayton and Gwinnett counties over the past 12 months.
Anyone interested in helping the dogs is being urged to contact LifeLine Animal Project about fostering or adoption.
