GEORGIA — At the end of October, the Georgia Department of Corrections announced that, following a fight at one prison days earlier, 26 of its facilities would be on lockdown.

Now, two facilities are still on full lockdown and others remain operating with restrictions in place.

That update came on Oct. 29, when multiple prisons were put on lockdown and under investigation after a fight at Hays State Prison involving four inmates.

Channel 2 Action News reported on the lockdowns, when GDC officials said the increased security was put in place after the fight, which GDC said was gang-related.

“We can confirm that an altercation among four inmates occurred at Hays SP on October 27th. Three offenders were transported to the local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and have since returned to the facility. The altercation is believed to have been gang-related and was contained to one dorm,” GDC Commissioner Tyrone Oliver said previously.

On Tuesday, GDC said Dooly State Prison and Macon State Prison remained on lockdown, while specific dorms at Smith, Valdosta and Wilcox state prisons were operating under restricted movements.

As for what that means for the day-to-day, GDC said “inmates [are] being escorted by staff” in the three prisons with restrictions in place. “All other facilities have resumed normal operations. Security threat assessments will continue at all facilities while investigations continue.”
